If you’re part of my newsletter, you have already received your copy of “An Unexpected Christmas,” but I also wanted to release it officially to my non-newsletter readers.

You can grab it through the freebies section of my website or through this link. “An Unexpected Christmas” is a 25,000 word novella set a few weeks after the events of The Reanimator’s Fate (TRM #4). To avoid confusion and spoilers, I highly suggest reading that book before this story.

Felipe’s life has changed for the first time in nearly twenty years: he’s retired, he has a partner who loves him, and he’s embarking on a new venture to help members of the Paranormal Society acclimate, but as the holidays rapidly approach and Oliver’s anxiety about Christmas gets worse, old insecurities rear their head.

Oliver has no experience with Christmas. Quakers don’t do holidays, and while he’s read books and watched others celebrate from afar, he fears he will somehow ruin the Galvans’ holiday.

Unfortunately, that fear might be founded when, between a mishap involving decorating and news from Teresa, Oliver and Felipe are forced to take over preparing for Christmas.

Will Oliver and Felipe be able to keep their anxieties in check, or will this Christmas be memorable for all the wrong reasons?

The Paranormal Society’s All Hallows’ Eve party is the highlight of the magical social season, and after years of going alone and ducking out after an hour, Oliver is hellbent on having a good time with Felipe this year, even if it kills him.

While Felipe is more than willing to wear a costume and dance the night away to make Oliver happy, an ominous prophecy from a sybil only hours before the festivities puts him on his guard. Unfortunately, the sybil’s warning isn’t Felipe’s only concern if the feelings coming across the tether are any indication.

Will Oliver and Felipe make it through the masquerade in one piece or will the prophetess’s warning be their undoing?

It’s here! It’s finally here! I feel like I have been waiting forever for Dead Magic to finally be out, and now that it’s out in the world, I don’t know what to do with myself. It took about nine months to produce from start to finish, and it’s beyond rewarding to know it’s in my readers’ hands. It’s out for Kindle and in paperback.

Because release days are a special occasion, I’ve marked the rest of the series down, so if you haven’t read the Ingenious Mechanical Devices. Now is the time to catch up.

Project Announcement: An Ingenious Mechanical Devices Short

Hi everyone,

I have decided (now that I’m about halfway in) to announce that the first short companion story for my steampunk/historical fantasy series the Ingenious Mechanical Devices will be out by the end of the summer.

What is it?

The story will be roughly 5,000 words or so and will take place after the events of The Winter Garden (IMD #2). It will be a standalone, but obviously, it would make more sense if it was read along with the other Ingenious Mechanical Devices stories. The working title is “An Oxford Holiday,” the story revolves around Adam journeying to Oxford to visit Immanuel. Unfortunately, getting a little privacy and time together is more difficult than it seems. The story will be offered for free on all platforms when it is finished (Amazon may take a few days to catch up with the other ebook platforms).

Why do this?

It may seem odd for an author to post something so short and for free, but I’m thinking of this short story as a free sample, a bonus for being a loyal reader or an incentive for new readers to give my work a try. I also know that it will take me a while to finish writing The Earl and the Artificer, so by releasing a short story, I’ll hopefully keep my readers interested between the two books. Recently, I have been reading K. J. Charles’s A Charm of Magpies series, and one of the things I love about them is that she writes short stories to go along with her books. It’s a great little teaser between stories, and I devour them just as I do her full-length novels. It’ll just be a light, fun story, but it will hopefully add a bit to the series and give a hint as to what will happen in book four when Adam and Immanuel reappear.
